Please note these contest rules. All contest rules are found here: https://www.elks.org/hoopshoot/compete/playbook.cfm
1) A maximum of 10 participants, in each age and gender group will be allowed
to compete. Participants will be seated in the order that they ‘check-in’ to the contest.
The contest begins when the first participant is called to shoot. He/she will be
offered 5 practice shots prior to shooting 10 shot attempts. Upon completing
this first group of shot attempts, they will retake their seat and the next
participant will be called to do the same. Once ALL participants have completed
their first 10 shots, they will, in the same order, be recalled to shoot 15 shot
attempts. No practice shots are offered in this second series.
2) Age eligible participants will shoot in their particular age and gender group.
-All Girls, and Boys ages 8-11, use a 28.5” circumference basketball.
-Boys 12-13 use a standard 29.5” circumference basketball.
-Boys and Girls ages 8-9 will shoot 11 ft. from the backboard
-All others will shoot 15 feet from the backboard. Basket rim height is a standard 10 ft. from the floor.
3) The highest score from the 25 shot attempts will be declared the winner. In the
event of a tie between 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd place scores, additional shots will be taken
until the tie is broken and one winner is declared 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd .
4) Penalties. The shot is voided if:
-the basketball is bounced more than 4 times prior to any shot
-a foul line foot fault occurs
-when given the basketball, the participant takes more than 10 seconds to make
a shot attempt
The Santa Barbara Elks Lodge #613 Hoop Shoot competition is governed by the National Elks Hoop Shoot Contest Rules: https://www.elks.org/hoopshoot/compete/playbook.cfm
5) Levels of Competition. The levels of competition are the Santa Barbara Lodge local area contest, West Central Coast (WCC) district contest, Southern California state semi-
final contest, Western United States region contest and finally, the national
finals.
Winners of our Santa Barbara Lodge local area contest receive an automatic
invitation to compete at the district contest. In addition, our local champions
and their parents will be invited as guests of the Lodge to the annual Hoop
Shoot trophy presentation dinner.
At the district contest, our local champions will be competing against champions
from other Elk Lodges within our WCC district, an area from Simi Valley to Paso
Robles. California conducts both a Southern and Northern state semi-final
contest. Highest scores from the Hawaii competition are compared with high
scores from the Northern California contest. The highest scores from the two
contests then are compared to determine a California/Hawaii champion. The
West Region contest includes champions from state contests of New Mexico,
Arizona, Utah, Nevada and California/Hawaii. This contest is held at Las
Vegas, Nevada.
Because our champions will be representing the Santa Barbara Elks Lodge, it
is expected that as they win at the ascending levels, they accept the invitation to
advance and compete. Because of travel distances and costs incurred, the
Santa Barbara Lodge provides some cost-offset for our champions competing at
the state semi-final contest. Parents of winners at the state semi-final, regional
and national contest levels attend the contests as guests of the national Elks
organization.
6) COVID Policy: On March 1, 2022, the requirement for unvaccinated persons to mask in indoor publicsettings and businesses was replaced by a strong recommendation that all persons, regardless of vaccine status, mask in indoor public settings and businesses (examples:retail, restaurants, theaters, family entertainment centers, meetings, state and localgovernment offices serving the public). Additionally, after March 11, 2022, the universalmasking requirement for K-12 and Childcare settings terminated.
On April 20, 2022, the universal masking requirement on public transit and in transit hubs was replaced by strong recommendations that individuals in these settings continue to mask while on public transit and indoors in transit hubs to continue protecting our most vulnerable and those communities disproportionately impacted byCOVID-19.
The National Elks organization has sponsored its Hoop Shoot Competition for 50 years. Click here to find out more about the Elks and their sponsorship of this national youth program.
